  • Swimming trips during winter to the Y in Summit and to Rutgers?
  • Swimming in the Dead River and removing the leeches?
  • The swinging bridge over the Dead River?
  • The boardwalk in the swamp?
  • The Silver Bridge & the Brick Works?

“Do you remember?”

  • Trying to ride the steers and getting bucked off into the mud, or a pasture pie?
  • Intermural baseball, basketball, football?
  • Trips to football games at Princeton?
  • Trips to Madison University?
  • Trips to Bertrands Island in Lake Hopatcong?
  • The songs we sang on the bus?
  • The "Blue Nightmare" school bus (made by White)?
  • The "Woody" station wagon?
  • Case tractors?
  • Manure spreaders?
  • Spreading manure?

  • Horse "apple" fights?
  • Pillow fights?
  • Rubber band fights?
  • Fist fights?

  • Two large Christmas trees in the dining hall?
  • "Two reeler" Saturday nights in the dining hall?
  • Bingo games in the dining hall?
  • A Country & Western band in the dining hall? (was it Bill Haley and the Saddle Tramps?)
  • Listening to "Hillbilly" music on the "Hometown Frolics" radio show from 1-3 in the afternoon?
  • Minstrel shows in the gym?

  • Sleigh riding the hill east of the cottages and trying to brake before the septic runoff?
  • Sleigh riding "dead man's hill" below the barns and trying not to break anything?
  • Ice skating on the pond?
  • Fishing the pond?

“Do you remember?”

  • Unauthorized rides at night without lights, in the pickup?
  • Unauthorized field trips, aka "running away"?

“Do you remember?”

  • Charlie Group's Gloves?
  • Doc Henry, the dentist who didn't use novocaine?
  • "Pop" Taylor's Cushman scooter?
  • Mr. Acken's horse bites?
  • Frank's spaghetti sauce?
  • Drakes' cakes?

  • The Pig Pens?
  • Running cats up the flag pole in a bucket?
  • Hair cuts? (and trying to skip them?)
  • Hayrides pulled by Jack or May?
  • "Stripping" cows at milking?
  • Getting kicked?
  • Getting hit by a frozen tail?

  • Raids on the Summer Camp?
  • The "Hat Gang"?
  • Brown shoe polish on the house parents' door knob?
  • Crank telephones?
  • Strange looking men who wandered over from the VA Hospital?

“Do you remember?”

  • Trying to find the Sunshine Nudist Camp?
  • Boy Scout Troop #55?
  • Camporees?
  • Contests in knot tying, first aid, fire starting, etc.?
  • Watchung Scout Camp in the summer?
  • Parading in Liberty Corners?

“Do you remember?”

  • The annual card party fund raiser?
  • "Parking cars" during the card party?
  • Tips?

“Do you remember?”

  • Lemon oil, CN & HTH?

“Do you remember?”

“I do.  I remember all of this and more; the good times, the bad times, the hard times and the fun times.

But most of all, I remember a place, a home that to my brother Jim and me was ten times better than the previous foster homes we'd been in.
